Apollo 11 è la missione spaziale più nota di Neil Armstrong, ma non l’unica (né la prima): nel 1962 l’aviatore entra a far parte della squadra della NASA, diventando il primo astronauta civile americano a volare nello spazio (il primato assoluto spetta a Valentina Tereškova, operaia tessile e paracadutista amatoriale lanciata nello spazio dai sovietici nel 1963, nell'ambito della missione Vostok 6).

Scomparso il 25 agosto 2012 a Cincinnati per problemi di salute, Neil Armstrong durante la carriera riceve numerosi premi e i riconoscimenti come la Medaglia presidenziale della libertà, la Congressional Space Medal of Honor e la Medaglia d'oro del Congresso.
