Negli Usa arriva l’Election Day: il 3 novembre i cittadini americani scelgono il nuovo presidente degli Stati Uniti, che guiderà il Paese dalla Casa Bianca per i prossimi 4 anni. In corsa per il Partito repubblicano l’uscente Donald Trump, mentre i democratici schierano l’ex vicepresidente di Obama, Joe Biden. Quest'anno in moltissimi hanno optato per il voto anticipato (early voting) oppure per quello via posta, anche per contenere i rischi legati alla pandemia di Covid-19. Ma come funzionano le elezioni negli Usa?

Il collegio elettorale - Una volta eletti, i grandi elettori vanno a formare il grande collegio elettorale che proclama il vincitore. Non è mai successo che i grandi elettori di un candidato votassero in massa per l'avversario, mentre qualche raro episodio individuale c'è stato. Il mandato del presidente - Il mandato per presidente degli Stati Uniti dura 4 anni. L'incarico inizia formalmente il 20 gennaio successivo al giorno delle elezioni. Il presidente non può andare oltre due mandati. In caso di morte o dimissioni, è il vicepresidente ad assumere l'incarico. (Foto Ipa)
