Le armate tedesche avevano progettato un attacco che sarebbe dovuto durare al massimo otto settimane. Il popolo e l'esercito russo, però, opposero una resistenza tale che li costrinse a continuare l’assedio per due anni e cinque mesi.

Contando anche i militari, il numero di russi che hanno perso la vita tra l’8 settembre 1941 e il 27 gennaio 1944 supera il milione. La città di Leningrado contava circa 2 milioni e mezzo di abitanti.

Una decisa controffensiva sovietica riuscì a cacciare gli invasori tedeschi oltre i confini settentrionali della Carelia nell’estate del 1944. Per festeggiare la liberazione, la popolazione si riversò nelle strade senza preoccuparsi di eventuali bombardamenti tedeschi.

L'anno dopo, il 27 gennaio 1945, l’Armata Rossa riuscì a entrare nel campo di concentramento di Auschwitz rivelando, così, al mondo intero l’orrore del genocidio nazista.

Fu l’assedio più lungo della Seconda Guerra mondiale, e il secondo più lungo della storia. Solo quello di Sarajevo da parte delle forze dell’ex Jugoslavia durò di più (5 aprile 1992 – 29 febbraio 1996).
