Makhmour - 50 km south of Erbil, some 100 km south of Mosul and 50 km north of Kirkuk -. Makhmour, a strategic point between the regional capital Erbil and the oil rich Kirkuk province was recaptured only days ago. Following an ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) offensive, the town fell to the Caliphate on the 8th of August. It was taken back by the Peshmerga and PKK Turkish fighters on August 10.
Outlawed as a terrorist group by Turkey, the US and the EU, the leftist PKK is normally based in the Qandil mountains of northern Iraq but was formed and principally operated in Turkey's mostly Kurdish southeast. PKK fighters were called for help by the Peshmerga following the ISIS offensive as they are very seasoned to guerilla-style fighting, which proves to be a great asset when opposing ISIS forces.ISIS's advances across Syria and Iraq have created strange bedfellows as well as challenging national borders, and Washington's air strikes are indirectly supporting PKK fighters. PKK fighters have established their current base in an hospital located in the Turkish district part Makhmour.
Makhmour was emptied of its population who decided to flee to nearby Erbil or the mountains. It is presently still deserted as only about 10 percent of its residents has decided to come back.
