Secondo Marcello Spagnulo, ingegnere aerospaziale e autori di libri sul tema, "far atterrare una sonda sulla superficie lunare è più complesso di quanto possa apparire. Solo gli Usa, la Russia e la Cina ci sono riusciti. Poiché sulla Luna non c’è atmosfera non è possibile usare il 'freno' atmosferico per rallentare la discesa di un lander, come avviene per esempio su Marte. Quindi, per allunare occorre diminuire l’altezza dell’orbita del lander fino a un valore limite dopo il quale attuare una discesa controllata da retrorazzi e da motori di assetto"

Tutto questo, ha spiegato ancora Spagnulo "implica un’elaborazione serrata tra la telemetria rilevata con i radar di bordo e i comandi di attivazione dei propulsori che mantengono l’assetto, la velocità orbitale e l’altezza dalla superficie. La procedura automatica che elabora in tempo reale la spinta e la direzione dei motori del lander per mantenere l’assetto giroscopico e ridurre sia la velocità che l’altezza, richiede un sistema microelettronico e propulsivo altamente performante".
