Nel 1981 anche la Grecia entra nella comunità europea, mentre il 1985 verrà ricordato per l’Accordo di Schengen, la prima reale abolizione delle frontiere fra Stati nazionali. L’area di libera circolazione viene sottoscritta tra cinque dei Paesi fondatori, tutti tranne l’Italia. L’accordo diventerà poi parte integrante della nuova Unione con il Trattato di Amsterdam del 1997

The Single European Act (SEA) was the first major revision of the 1957 Treaty of Rome. The Act set the European Community an objective of establishing a Common Market by 31 December 1992, and codified European Political Cooperation, the forerunner of the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy. It was signed at Luxembourg on 17 February 1986, and at The Hague on 28 February 1986. It came into effect on 1 July 1987, under the Delors Commission.

I primi anni Duemila sono caratterizzati da una grande espansione dell’Unione: nel 2004 entrano Cipro, Malta, Estonia, Lettonia, Lituania, Polonia, Ungheria, Repubblica Ceca, Slovacchia e Slovenia (la foto di rito ritrae Capi di Stato e di governo dei Paesi europei dopo l'allargamento). Nel 2007 tocca a Romania e Bulgaria, mentre il 2013 è l’anno della Croazia, ultimo nuovo membro dell’Ue. Negli stessi anni sorgono però le prime crepe nel consenso popolare al progetto politico europeo. La Costituzione europea siglata nel 2004 (in foto i leader UE durante le trattative, fra cui l'italiano Silvio Berlusconi) non viene ratificata da Francia e Paesi Bassi, che consultano i propri cittadini tramite un referendum. Viene adottato allora nel 2007 il Trattato di Lisbona, che recepisce molti elementi della Costituzione bocciata
