Geoscience Australia afferma che il terremoto ha come epicentro la cittadina di Mansfield, nello stato del Victoria. Circa 35mila edifici sono rimasti senza elettricità e molti hanno subito danni piuttosto ingenti. Secondo l'istituto neozelandese GeoNet si tratta della scossa più forte che ha colpito l’Australia dal 1997
