Dopo l’omicidio del presidente Gemayel, la vendetta dei falangisti si abbatté sui civili dei campi profughi. ELIE HOBEIKAH
- Solo il 20 settembre le forze regolari libanesi ripresero il controllo dei campi profughi, dopo che gli israeliani avevano cominciato a ritirarsi da Beirut ovest il giorno prima. Responsabile della strage, come stabilì una Commissione d'inchiesta israeliana, fu Elie Hobeikah (nella foto), 25 anni all'epoca, divenuto in seguito deputato e ministro, ucciso a Beirut il 24 gennaio 2002 con un'autobomba

RESPONSABILITÀ INDIRETTE DI SHARON
- La Commissione d'indagine indicò anche “responsabilità indirette” di Sharon che, travolto dalle polemiche, fu costretto alle dimissioni. Nel 2001 la denuncia di un gruppo di palestinesi e libanesi fece aprire un'inchiesta in Belgio contro Sharon per crimini contro l'umanità. Hobeikah si disse pronto a testimoniare al processo, ma pochi mesi dopo fu ucciso (nella foto l’autobomba). L'inchiesta belga fu archiviata e nessuno è mai stato processato

I MANIFESTANTI
- Mentre i ministri di Menachem Begin (nella foto con Sharon) discutevano animatamente se accogliere o meno le raccomandazioni della Commissione, sulla collina antistante l'ufficio del primo ministro a Gerusalemme si svolgeva un'affollata manifestazione di Peace Now, che chiamava Sharon e Begin sul banco degli imputati. A interrompere il dibattito fu - d'improvviso - il segretario del premier, Azriel Nevo: una bomba a mano era stata lanciata contro i dimostranti, “ci sono un morto e tre feriti”

- Presentatosi in ritardo alla seduta, Sharon contestò le raccomandazioni della Commissione dicendo che era essenziale respingere il concetto di “responsabilità indiretta” nei massacri. “Si tratta - si difese - di affermazioni molto gravi, per Israele e per il popolo ebraico”. Sharon sostenne di fronte agli altri ministri che né il Mossad, né Aman (l'intelligence militare) né i vertici dell'esercito avevano avvertito che l'ingresso dei falangisti a Sabra e Shatila rischiava di concludersi con un eccidio

SHARON LASCIATO SOLO
- Il titolare della Difesa rivendicò del resto di aver di fatto lasciato entrare nei due campi profughi le unità falangiste (“che fino a quel momento si erano comportate in maniera ordinata”, disse) allo scopo di risparmiare le vite di militari israeliani. LA TESTIMONIANZA
- Secondo un testimone dell'epoca, il corrispondente militare Ron Ben Yishai, Begin a quel punto aveva maturato la sensazione di essere stato a sua volta “raggirato” dal generale-ministro durante la guerra. Il governo Begin approvò in blocco le raccomandazioni del giudice Kahan, incluso il licenziamento di Sharon, e un suo consigliere, Uri Dan, commentò profeticamente: “Chi non lo vuole oggi alla Difesa, lo avrà domani come primo ministro”
