Le annessioni da parte di Mosca delle quattro regioni ucraine, dove sono stati condotti i referendum dichiarati una "farsa" dalla comunità internazionale, aggravano gli interrogativi sul destino della centrale nucleare di Zaporizhzhia, che si estende nella zona ora riconosciuta da Mosca come soggetto della Federazione. L'Ucraina ha subito condannato "la detenzione illegale" da parte delle forze russe di Igor Murashov, direttore generale della centrale: "Questo crimine è un nuovo atto di terrorismo di Stato da parte della Russia e rappresenta una grave violazione del diritto internazionale. Invitiamo la comunità internazionale, compresi l'Onu, l'Aiea e il G7, a prendere misure decise" al riguardo, ha dichiarato in una nota il ministero degli Esteri di Kiev

Petro Kotin, il capo della compagnia ucraina che gestisce la centrale, Energoatom, parlando con la Bbc, ha inoltre detto che la Russia sta cercando di trasferirla alla società per l'energia atomica russa Rosatom: "Stanno cercando di costringere il nostro personale a firmare accordi precisi per il lavoro alla Rosatom"

Con i suoi sei reattori, quello di Zaporizhzhia è l'impianto nucleare più grande d'Europa e tra i primi 10 al mondo. A marzo è passato sotto il controllo delle truppe di Mosca. Il personale ucraino ha continuato a gestire la struttura, ma per via dei rischi di sicurezza e della costante perdita di connessione all'alimentazione esterna - necessaria per impedire al combustibile di surriscaldarsi - la centrale è stata 'spenta'

L'Agenzia internazionale per l'Energia atomica (Aiea) i primi di settembre ha effettuato una missione di monitoraggio nell'impianto, ma per ora ha fallito nell'intento di istituire una zona di sicurezza intorno alla struttura. Con l'annessione della regione di Zaporizhzhia, Mosca molto probabilmente nazionalizzerà la struttura, tagliando i legami con l'operatore ucraino Energoatom

Non è però ancora chiaro se l'agenzia russa per l'energia nucleare, Rosatom, diventerà davvero il nuovo operatore: un passo del genere scatenerebbe infatti le sanzioni occidentali. Il destino dell'impianto ad oggi appare quindi molto incerto

Difficile pensare che lo stabilimento possa essere riavviato finché continuano i combattimenti e anche se in qualche modo finissero, ci sarebbero molti problemi legati all'operatore, alle licenze e alla connessione con la rete elettrica russa. L'impianto di Zaporizhzhia potrebbe quindi seguire il destino del reattore di ricerca di Sebastopoli, chiuso nel 2014 e mai riavviato
