1 maggio - L'Ucraina riesce a evacuare i primi cento civili rifugiati nell'acciaieria. Il 6 maggio la Russia afferma che 50 civili sono stati evacuati dall'impianto metallurgico, tra cui 11 bambini, in un'operazione umanitaria. Un video pubblicato da Ukrinform mostra una colonna di denso fumo nero levarsi dall'acciaieria Azovstal. Sempre Ukrinform, citando il consigliere del sindaco di Mariupol, Petro Andryushchenko, aveva parlato di un attacco non solo dal cielo e con l'artiglieria ma anche con i carri armati russi all'acciaieria e sul fatto che era divampato un incendio nel sito.
