E’ tornata in Afghanistan e ha ricevuto una casa direttamente dal presidente Ashraf Ghani Sharbat Gula, la "Monna Lisa" afghana profuga in Pakistan immortalata dal fotografo Steve McCurry nel 1984 in uno scatto che, da una copertina di National Geographic, ha fatto negli anni il giro del mondo.
Il rischio del carcere - La donna rischiava una lunga pena detentiva in Pakistan perché accusata di essere in possesso di documenti falsi ma un tribunale di Peshawar ha deciso di infliggerle solo 12 giorni di carcere e una pena pecuniaria, disponendo inoltre la sua espulsione. Per oltre 30 anni Sharbat Gula ha vissuto in Pakistan nel campo per profughi afghani di Nasir Bagh, dove McCurry la scoprì e fotografò da bambina nel 1984 e la ritrovò per ritrarla di nuovo ormai adulta nel 2002.
Il presidente afghano: "La sua vita ci ispira tutti" - Una volta rientrata in Afghanistan la donna, in compagnia di due figli, ha incontrato a Kabul il presidente Ashraf Ghani che le ha consegnato le chiavi di un appartamento, per poi affermare in un tweet di essere stato "felice di aver dato il benvenuto a Sharbat Gula e alla sua famiglia". "La sua vita- ha scritto - ci ispira tutti. Lei rappresenta tutte le donne coraggiose di questa nostra terra".

I rifugiati afghani in Pakistan - La storia di Sharbat, vedova e madre, è la stessa di migliaia di afghani che sin dal 1979, dall'invasione sovietica, hanno lasciato il loro paese per il Pakistan dove di fatto hanno spesso una libertà molto limitata. Lo scorso anno, dopo la strage del dicembre 2014 alla scuola di Peshawar, il governo di Islamabad ha iniziato a premere per il rimpatrio dei rifugiati afghani che vivono per lo più nel nordovest del Paese. Islamabad minaccia di fatto di espellere entro marzo un milione di persone.

Pakistani security officials escorted Gula overnight from a hospital in Peshawar, where she had been staying since her arrest last month for living illegally in the country, and handed her over to Afghan authorities at the Torkham border. Gula’s deportation comes amid Pakistani pressure to send 2.5 million Afghan refugees back home even though Afghanistan is facing a bloody Taliban insurgency and would struggle to look after so many returnees. “I welcome her back to the bosom of her motherland,” Ghani said as an expressionless Gula stood beside him during a small ceremony at the palace in Kabul. “I’ve said repeatedly, and I like to repeat it again, that our country is incomplete until we absorb all of our refugees.” Ghani promised to provide Gula with a furnished apartment to ensure she “lives with dignity and security in her homeland”.
