La Fulbright Association assegnando il premio Bono, ha motivato la scelta così: “Un modo per onorare l'impegno di Bono nel cercare giustizia combattendo per porre fine alla povertà estrema, affrontare le crisi sanitarie globali e stimolare lo sviluppo economico nelle parti più povere del pianeta. La Fulbright Association crede che Bono incarni il meglio della leadership in tempi di crisi e sfide globali implacabili”.
