Lo stabilimento è dunque fondamentale nella catena di produzione industriale dell’Ucraina. La fabbrica, come scritto da Repubblica, è gemellata con l’impianto di produzione di carbon coke metallurgico di Adviivka: il combustibile prodotto serve proprio ad alimentare gli altoforni di Mariupol

Lo stabilimento Azovstal, dove si trovano i difensori di Mariupol, dove i civili si nascondono negli scantinati dai bombardamenti, continua ad essere coperto dal fuoco nemico.
Solo nella notte scorsa sono stati effettuati 35 raid aerei, durante i quali uno dei negozi ha preso fuoco. Ma soprattutto, hanno colpito i civili che ora sono intrappolati. I soldati del reggimento Azov forniscono il primo soccorso e fanno ogni sforzo per liberare i civili dalle macerie.

I combattenti del reggimento Azov sono riusciti a resistere proprio grazie alla fitta rete di cunicoli dello stabilimento, anche se i russi rimangono determinati a snidarli. Mosca il 5 maggio ha confermato di aver sferrato pesanti bombardamenti con aerei, missili e artigliera sulla struttura ma ha smentito di aver attaccato l'acciaieria da terra, come sostenuto da Kiev

Finché i militari ucraini rimarranno asserragliati nella fabbrica, il Cremlino non potrà rivendicare il controllo completo di Mariupol, dove intenderebbe preparare una parata per celebrare il Giorno della Vittoria il 9 maggio. Ma va considerato che un attacco di fanteria per eliminare tutti i difensori di Azovstal comporterebbe costi elevatissimi alle truppe di Mosca

Non è noto quante munizioni abbiano ancora a disposizione i combattenti ucraini. Inoltre i cunicoli dell'acciaieria rischiano di trasformarsi in una trappola mortale per i russi, che dovrebbero dispiegare una notevole superiorità numerica contro un avversario dotato di una perfetta conoscenza di un terreno ostile e molto articolato
